Coach Noy Says How to Stay Motivated

“Hi Coach,

Every time I start a workout routine, I’m super pumped for a few weeks, then eventually my excitement goes away. How do I stay motivated and committed?

Demotivated Denise”

Denise,

I know exactly how that feels. I know mentally you’re psyching yourself out, feeling like you can just start whenever. Feeling like you can just turn it on tomorrow. You can, but you’re not mentally ready. When I was boxing, I was in the gym but mentally I was someplace else. You just have to want it. I knew I didn’t want it enough to be a champion fighter. That’s why I never became a fighter. Because even though I knew how to do it, I didn’t want it that bad. Even working out, I was a two week warrior. For two weeks I’d be the best ever. Three days. I was the king of committing for three days, then falling off for six months. Committed for two weeks, then falling off for three years. What happened to me, I woke up one day and I said I’m tired of looking like this, let me see if I can be better, let me see if I can motivate myself, let me see if this is something that I really want to do — I pushed myself everyday since then. If you really want it, you’re going to go after it. If you really want it, you’re going to go get it. There’s no get rich quick scheme. There’s no “do this” and the weight’s going to magically fall off. That doesn’t exist. You have to make time to do what you want. You have to make time for that goal.
