The best sequels build off their predecessors by respecting what came before them, while at the same time daring to be different — creating new avenues for the franchise to move forward. 1 Million Lucky by Paco Rabanne does exactly that in this exciting follow-up to the iconic original 1 Million.
Opening with a nonspecific harshly sharp sweetness threw me off at first. Especially when considering the glorious opening of the original. Luckily, this was all a ruse. If everything was perfect in life, we would never be able to recognize luck. With that shock surprise opening, what comes next is a welcome delight.
Candied versions of plum and honey make their way through covered with a stirring nutty accord. While the sharpness never really goes away, it creates a welcoming edge to what could have easily fallen into pure candy territory. This allows 1 Million Lucky to shine with bold confidence and a mischievous charm.
By taking a daring approach with the ideas that made 1 Million a classic, 1 Million Lucky was able to take all my expectations of what a sequel should be and instead showed me the exciting possibilities of what a sequel could be.
